She was an amazingly bright person, as was my grandfather, who barely
finished grammar school, but to whom everyone in the family went when
they needed information or advice. In her late eighties, when vision
problems made reading and doing crossword puzzles too difficult, my
grandmother entertained herself doing algebra problems.
