It was an affiliated program in Kentucky that was cheaper (money was
an issue because my parents were both high school teachers). I went
there in the summers after 7th and 8th grade, and then in high school
I started applying for the elite state-run all-expenses-paid program.
The first time I tried out was in studio art; I made it to the finals,
but ultimately didn't get accepted. The next year, I tried out in
math, and easily got in. I'd have gone back, but you're only allowed
to do it once (and you can only do it the summer after your sophomore
or junior year).
I just realized that I have absolutely no idea what I did the summer
after 9th grade! (Senior year summer was spent teaching math and
English in a special program for...um, delinquent...middle schoolers.)
